After a series of events that expose them to each other's families and communities, Nadiya and Durga marry. In 1947, as Partition proceeds, Nadiya's husband is killed by fellow Hindus as he runs away from his house to hers. Durga's and Nadiya's friendship and love for each other helps them both get through the hardships of Partition.
The music is by Bhupen Hazarika. The song "Saat Niklegi" was used in the score of Quentin Tarantino's 2012 film "Django Unchained". "Nadiya Ke Paaar" opened to mixed reviews from critics. As of 2013, review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes records that 43% of critics gave the film positive reviews based on 5 reviews, with an average rating of 6.6 out of 10. "Bandhan" (1979) was the last film of director Shyam Benegal . After which, he had put on hold his creative endeavours for more than 20 years. Nadiya Ke Paaar, had picked up by M/s Production Finance Ltd. The film eventually did not do well at the box office. It was later dubbed in Telugu as "Rathnavudu".
The soundtrack for Nadiya Ke Paar was composed by Ravi Shankar with lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar. Bollywood actress Swanand Kirkire, became very fond of this song and used it in her own wedding, though she is a Hindu. In 2014, after the marriage of her son, she created a compilation video of this song with lyrics from the movie. In 2012 Nadiya Ke Paar was digitally remastered for DVD release by Central Digital Labz of Bangalore under the banner Films Division. It has been certified with a U certificate by the Indian Censor Board. The film has been released on DVD on 14 April 2013 under the name "Nadiya Ke Paar (Gold Jubilee Limited Edition)".
